Where else would you see Joell Ortiz as the favorite and not the underdog? Joell's mixtape covering the classics made huge waves earlier in the year as he absolutely shredded instrumentals from our favorite classic hip hop tracks. He was truly in his comfort zone spitting over these tracks as he's got the old school lyrical mentality. This tape just sounded like he was chillin' with his crew outside in a cypher and just spitting for the love of hip hop.
His competitor in this round of 1on1 is K-Beta of Innerloop Records. Beta Max took this concept even further by picking an instrumental from each year starting from 89' up until now. This is my first exposure to K-Beta (aside from possibly hearing him on Innterloop's Illmatic Remix project), but this dude can straight spit. I listened to these 2 tapes back to back and K-Beta has a similar lyrical tenacity of Ortiz. The songs are a bit more structured compared to Ortiz's quick verses/no hooks but Beta similarly demolished every track. I actually enjoyed hearing some of the more current instrumentals (like Kanye's "Flashing Lights") and what Beta did with them.
If you haven't listened to one or both of these tapes and love you some straight hip hop spitters while listening to some classic beats, here's your chance. Vote in the top right of the page or leave a comment on which emcee did a better job "covering the classics."

both of em killed it but i'd give it to beta. he actually adapted his style to each track. props to both
K-Beta by a mile. Much more thought and structure in every song.
Ortiz killed it...neva heard of KBeta but this is actually a tough one
Just good to hear some real emcees respect the pioneers
I think thats the brilliance of Ortiz's tape though. He didn't structure, organize, or craft songs. He just spit raw lyrics and had fun with it.
beta incorperated what he was goin through during each year,n still kept it real witty, his lyrical content is ridiculous....that dude is a problem.
K-BETA ALL DAY.JOELLS TOUGH TOO.BETA EATS, BREATHES ,SLEEPS HIP HOP!
