MIXTAPE REVIEW: DJ Crazy Chris-Bionic Blendz 3

MIXTAPE REVIEW
DJ Crazy Chris-Bionic Blendz 3

I know Crazy Chris will hate me for even comparing Bionic Blendz 3 to Girl Talk’s Feed the Animals for reasons only a real DJ (+me) will understand lol, but since most people are now aware of Girl Talk’s style due to his popularity explosion I think it’s a good place to begin. Now I absolutely loved Girl Talk’s Feed the Animals (I rated it the best mixtape of 2008), but after a head to head listen something about Bionic Blendz 3 hits harder. It might be the fact that Girl Talk’s mix now seems a little too cluttered. Feed the Animals’ main mission comes off as trying to get a rise out of the audience by introducing every big hit song of the moment and sprinkling in some old favorites. While each song does have a theme, I feel the tape is still best served as a party tape or a tape to impress your friends with something “cool and crazy.” Bionic Blendz 3 however, takes the listener through a journey crafting mixes that transcend genres and perceived boundaries of music. Instead of focusing on mostly current club hits like Feed the Animals, the backbone of Bionic Blendz are the classics (in both rock and hip hop) that make you crack a smile when they hit your eardrums. This tape isn’t meant for a bunch of club maniacs to rave to, but for people from any generation to sit back and enjoy the songs that touched them in the past (whether from a month or 30 years ago).

The tape starts off with Paycheck game RIPPING apart Pharaoh Monch’s classic “Simon Says.” You might know Paycheck from being the voice of Crazy Chris’ past tapes but this time he shows his lyrical prowess on the microphone. He says its best with “Crazy Chris about the mash-up, wack DJ’s SHUT THE F*CK UP.”

The 2nd track/first mash-up is absolutely mind-numbing. The track list doesn’t do it justice because what you will hear will erase your pre conceived notions of the originals. I’m not a 50 Cent fan but when the Beatle’s “I Feel Fine” came in as the backdrop I was bobbing my head. Then the Temptations and Big Pun take the stage together leading into snippets of MC Shan’s ode to “The Bridge” mixed with the Chili Pepper’s “Under the Bridge.” This track slaps you in the face and gets your attention because the rest of the tape is going to be one hell of a ride.

“My Shit” is an ode the ladies in a way that only Crazy Chris can come up. Name another tape you’ll hear Nas with the Greg Kihn Band hahah. And then you’ve got Pitbull telling the ladies to shake their thang over…….Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” and Three Dog Night’s “Momma Told Me Not to Come”!!! After tricking you with an intro by Enigma and Gary Jules, “Five On It” turns in a funkadelic mix with Biggie and Rhymefest spitting over American Woman.

I could keep going with these absurd collaborations and go through every mix but I’ll let you discover them yourselves, as everyone is bound to have their own favorites. I will say that the last two mixes, “When’s the Last Time You Watched Captain Kangaroo” and “Come Together to Say Goodbye,” epitomize Crazy Chris’ contribution to the mixtape and mash-up culture. He takes his craft seriously and shows what true love for music is. He transports us into another world, where for 53 minutes we can just appreciate music and its connection to our lives. This mix will make anyone from 20 to 60 years old smile and think about the memories these songs bring back. Crazy Chris is paving his own lane and single-handedly breaking creative boundaries in the mixtape and mashup game.

For the next few weeks “I don’t like it unless its CC, you might see me in my brand new WHIP, with my BIONIC BLENDZ, pumping my brand new MIX, you don’t like it get off my brand new D**K”
